Many parents often send their children to attend piano lessons class when they are still at a very young age, with some as young as four years old. It can be quite a challenging job for the piano teacher to try and keep the class going as children around these ages tends to be more restless and difficult to keep focus.

Nevertheless, we have come through this stage and the key points is to make the piano lessons fun and interesting in order to keep the young kids stay focus and attentive. Bear in mind that every child is unique and their learning pace can be very different; while some young children can learn very fast, there will also be some who will have problem coping and need a longer time to catch up.

These are some experiences that we have gone through and would like to share with you. Regardless of whether you are parents looking at sending your young kids for piano lessons, aspiring piano teachers, instructors or anyone else, hopefully, you will find these tips beneficial and you are able to understand the needs of why it is beneficial for children to attend piano lessons.

1. Make the child comfortable with piano.

One of the factors why some children throw tantrum when they knew that they are going for the piano classes, or lost interest and discontinue their piano lessons class is that they don’t enjoy the lessons and environment.

Both the piano teacher and parents have equal responsibility of ensuring the kids is enjoying piano and that can be achieve by maintaining a stress free and fun learning environment.

For piano teacher, while conducting the lessons, if the kids ask to go to the bathroom, don’t yell or get angry. This is very common among young children. If they have not practice a lesson, don’t lose your temper because it could be that they have too many activities going on and don’t have time to learn.

For parents, don’t ask for the sky and expect your child to play Mozart. Allow them times and spaces to learn piano. Let them have their musical fun and only interfere if they show signs of laziness. Keep in mind that they are only young kids and a stress free environment at home is very crucial to cultivating their interest in piano.

2. Make the child attentive and focus

As adult, we have gone to school and college and you tell me how many times you have lost your focus and start thinking about something else while your teacher is teaching? Lost count, isn’t it?

It is the same with young children and do expect the worst as we are talking about young children, with some only four years old, so there will be many times when they start to lost their focus and attention during the duration of the class.

When the child gets distracted, it could be they don’t understand what the piano teacher is trying to teach or explain and it could be they are just bored as well.

Nevertheless, when that happens, as a piano teacher, you should take a break from the lessons and ask the child if there is any interesting thing that catches their attention. Let him or her has a chance to say and express and this will actually make them more relax and ease. As a matter of fact, they knew that you are watching them and it will help them to keep their focus as well.

3. Reward the child

Okay, I am not a big fan of pampering the kids with expensive gifts every now and then as that seems to give them a wrong impressions and values. But, I do realize and recognize the importance of showing support and rewards if the kids do well.

And here, we are talking about small appreciation such as fun stickers, word of encouragement such as praising the child in the class. Take some times to commend the child if they do well. If they play a song well or spend the entire lessons learning how to draw a quarter notes and completed it, reward them and praise them.

Rewarding the child is something that each and every piano teacher can do easily and these actions, however insignificant or simple, will make the children feel proud and motivated, and this can make the class for fun and having them looking forward to attending the class.

For parents, the same logic apply. Encourage your kids and show them that you are very proud of them. Sometimes, a simple gesture such as talking your friends or relative that your children have done well in some areas in their presence will actually do wonder rather than buying them gifts.

Piano lessons for children can be fun, interesting and it can be boring as well. It is very much depending on how the class is being organized and maintain, how well the piano teacher interact with the children and how parents take on their roles towards their young children.

No matter what, the priority should always be making the child enjoying piano and even if they eventually decide that it is not for them, at least, they have enjoy the music and fun.
